BIMSTEC: A solution for Regional Crisis?

7 February 2020

The migration of the Rohingya ethnic group into the South and Southeast Asian countries has been a perpetual problem since the 1990s. However, currently, this movement became a major concern to the region. Since the Constitution of Myanmar stripped the Rohingyas of their citizenship in 2008, the atrocities against them by the Myanmarese Army have increased to an extent where they are pushed to seek asylum in large numbers. This made the condition chronic for countries like Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The influx of the Rohingyas is a major concern of security threat that has been reiterated by the government representatives and academics time and again in most of the BIMSTEC countries.

As both SAARC and ASEAN have been unsuccessful to resolve this crisis, there is a need for regional organisation who is capable to resolve such issues.BIMSTEC has been projected by many in academia as an alternative to SAARC  and it could be a good platform to discuss and seek a solution for this crisis.
