Nigeria: A 24-hour curfew imposed
On 2 August, the Nigerian government imposed a 24-hour curfew in Kano, Jigawa, Yobe and Katsina states. The curfew was imposed following a protest against the high cost of living was hijacked by looters and hooligans and police had to use tear gas. Shops were looted in Kano and a blast took place in Kawori which killed 16 people. Residents suspect involvement of Boko Haram behind the blast. South Africa: Miss South Africa finalist caught amid xenophobic sentiments
On 2 August, Miss South Africa, Chidimma Adetshina, was reported to be bullied online over her descent. Her father has Nigerian roots while her mother’s family comes from Mozambique. People are outraged by her South African representation. The phenomenon of xenophobia in South Africa is popularly called “Afrophobia.” (“Beauty contest sparks row over who counts as South African,” BBC, 2 August 2024)
