Protests erupt in Senegal over economic crisis
On 09 April, Africa News reported that hundreds of workers, union members, and opposition supporters marched in Dakar to protest rising living costs and alleged broken government promises amid a deepening debt crisis. Demonstrators, organised by major labour unions and opposition groups, accused the government of failing to improve wages and working conditions, while also criticising layoffs in the public sector. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko faced particular criticism from protesters demanding his resignation. Authorities say the crisis stems from a large inherited public debt, limiting spending capacity. With Senegal’s debt-to-GDP ratio exceeding 130 per cent, economic pressures have intensified, especially among youth. The unrest reflects growing frustration over stalled reforms and worsening economic conditions under the current administration led by Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Djibouti’s Guelleh holds final rally ahead of election
On 09 April, Africa News reported that Ismaïl Omar Guelleh held his final campaign rally ahead of Djibouti’s presidential election, where he is widely expected to extend his 27-year rule. Addressing supporters in Djibouti, Guelleh called for unity and portrayed himself as a guarantor of stability in a volatile region. The country’s strategic location along the Bab al-Mandab strait has made it a key international military hub, hosting bases from major powers including the United States, France, and China. However, critics and rights groups accuse Guelleh of suppressing opposition and limiting press freedom, describing the vote as a foregone conclusion. With a fragmented opposition and concerns over his health, the election is unlikely to significantly alter the country’s political landscape.
