On 01 July, Ukraine’s Defense Forces reported carrying out a high-precision strike on a command post of Russia’s 8th Combined Arms Army in the occupied Donetsk region, according to the General Staff, which confirmed the operation as a “successful hit.” While enemy losses are still being assessed, the strike has reportedly disrupted Russia’s ability to coordinate operations along the Pokrovsk and Toretsk fronts. The Ukrainian military emphasized its ongoing strategy to dismantle Russia’s command and communications infrastructure.

Claims by Russia
On 01 July, RT reported that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and France’s President Emmanuel Macron held their first phone conversation since September 2022, discussing the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. During the call, Putin blamed Western policies for igniting the war in Ukraine, claiming they ignored Russia’s security concerns and created an "anti-Russian bridgehead" in the country. He reiterated that any resolution must address the conflict’s root causes and reflect new territorial realities. Macron, who once floated the idea of deploying French troops to Ukraine, has recently struck a more measured tone, suggesting the time may be approaching to reopen dialogue with Russia as part of broader European security negotiations.
On 30 June, Russia’s Defense Ministry released new footage showing its airborne engineering troops using drones to remotely detonate Ukrainian roadside bombs in the Zaporozhzhia region. The video depicts quadcopters dropping small explosives—often mortar rounds—on suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs), enabling soldiers to neutralize threats from a safe distance during active combat operations.

Responses from Europe and the US
On 01 July, the US has suspended certain missile shipments to Ukraine due to concerns over the depletion of its military stockpiles, the Pentagon confirmed. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated the decision followed a global review of U.S. military assistance and was made to prioritize national security interests. This development is a setback for Ukraine, which is under increasing pressure from intensified Russian missile and drone attacks. Russian forces, who already control about 20 per cent of Ukrainian territory, have recently advanced further in the southeastern regions of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk. According to Reuters, the halted shipments include air defence interceptors and precision munitions critical to Ukraine’s ability to counter aerial threats. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the US has provided Ukraine with over USD 66 billion in military aid.

Macron, who initially engaged Putin in early 2022 in efforts to prevent the invasion, has since adopted a firmer stance, warning that Russian aggression poses a broader threat to Europe.
