About NIAS-IPRI
The International Peace Research Initiative (IPRI) at NIAS has been following contemporary conflicts. Its flagship publication – Conflict Weekly, looks at contemporary conflicts, on a weekly basis. During 2021-24, the IPRI also organized a series of workshops on contemporary conflicts.

About NIAS “Conflict History Project”
In 2024, the IPRI started a new initiative – the “Conflict History Project,” as a part of its academic pursuit of studying conflicts in-depth. The inaugural workshop was held in March 2024 at Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru.

In 2025, NIAS-IPRI in collaboration with Kristu Jayanti College will hold the second workshop. The focus for this year will be on South Asia, Southeast & East Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

The study will look at the following as a part of conflict history project:

  • The beginning (Causes, issues, actors, state responses)
  • Continuation (Phases, issues, attempts to resolve)
  • Transition/transformation, responses (Local, regional/provincial, national and global)
  • The state of conflict in 2025, and a forecast.

Detailed chronology, an extensive survey of literature including an annotated bibliography, field research (if possible) and interviews.

The final essay, after the necessary review will be published as NIAS reports.

Objectives
The IPRI Conflict History Project aims to create a database on conflicts across the world at the National Institute of Advanced Studies.

Second, the Project aims to build capacity amongst young scholars to research on conflicts.

Third, the Project also aims to build a network of scholars working on conflicts.

Fourth, the Project aims to publish a series of essays and contribute to conflict research literature.

Abstracts: When, Where and Who
The Institute is organizing the second workshop under the “NIAS Conflict History Project” tentatively during August 2025. The Workshop will be held at Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru, where the draft essays will be presented and reviewed.

Draft essays are compulsory to be invited for the Second CHP Workshop.

Assistant and Associate Professors, Research Associates, and young scholars pursuing PhD are invited to submit abstracts for the above.

The abstract should focus on a particular conflict, looking at the above sections. The abstract should include a short resume and two referees.

The abstract should be sent by email, addressed to Prof D Suba Chandran (subachandran@nias.res.in) with a cc to ipri@nias.res.in by 30 April 2025.

Timeline
30 Apr 2025: Submission of Abstract
05 May 2025: Confirmation from NIAS
15 Jun 2025: First Draft in 5000-6000 Words
30 Jun 2025: Confirmation to take part in the workshop after an internal review on originality, plagiarism and AI
Early August: Workshop at Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru
31 Aug 2025: Final Essays for review and publication subsequently.

Second CHP Workshop: Registration, Accommodation & Travel
There is no registration fee for the Workshop.
We will take care of the accommodation and local hospitality for two days.
The participants, however, will have to take care of their travel.

About NIAS-IPRI
The International Peace Research Initiative (IPRI) at NIAS, is part of the Conflict Resolution and Peace Research Programme at the School of Conflict and Security Studies. Its flagship publication, Conflict Weekly, covers issues of peace and conflict every week. Since 2023, IPRI has also been publishing a Conflict Annual.

As a part of capacity building, IPRI organizes a series of workshops on contemporary conflicts in collaboration with partner institutions in Bangalore, Chennai, and Pondicherry. IPRI also aims to build a network of scholars and institutions across India that studies peace and conflict issues worldwide.

IPRI also conducts a year-long online course on Contemporary peace processes, theories and thinkers for postgraduate scholars.
