BIMSTEC: Disaster Management as a Tool for Regional Cooperation

7 February 2020

By Rashmi Ramesh

PhD Scholar, NIAS

The Bay of Bengal is one of the most sensitive and disaster-prone areas. Cyclones, floods, and earthquakes are common in the Bay and surrounding landlocked countries. In 2004, the region was severely affected by the tsunami and since then, disaster management has gained more traction. BIMSTEC began focusing on environment and disaster management in 2005, and today, it is one of the priority areas of cooperation.

It is important to study disaster management as a tool of regional cooperation in the area. Given the weak disaster management mechanisms existing, cooperation and coordination is the need of the hour. Formulating a BIMSTEC Climate Action Plan; establishing a Disaster Management Authority; cooperation of the early warning systems; and incorporating success stories from institutions like ASEAN is the key to successful regional cooperation in this regard.
