Pakistan successfully tests indigenous Taimoor air-launched missile

In Focus
ISPR: Pakistan successfully tests indigenous Taimoor air-launched missile
Anti-ship missile test builds on continued push towards indigenous capability development; PM and President praised the achievement

On 21 April, The News International and Dawn reported that the Pakistan Navy announced a successful test of the indigenously developed Taimoor air-launched cruise missile, with the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) describing it as a “powerful demonstration of precision strike capability and operational readiness”. The anti-ship missile “executed its mission with exceptional precision”, validating the Pakistan Navy’s ability to detect and neutralise maritime threats at extended ranges, the statement said. It further added the test marked “a pivotal elevation of national defence capability”, strengthening a “multi-dimensional coordinated strike posture”. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised scientists and engineers for achieving a “significant milestone” in indigenous weapons development.

The launch builds on a series of recent developments. In January, the Pakistan Navy successfully test-fired a surface-to-air missile during exercises in the North Arabian Sea, while the Pakistan Air Force conducted a flight test of the indigenously developed Taimoor weapon system, capable of striking targets up to 600 kilometres away from both land and sea. The Taimoor system reflects Pakistan’s emphasis on self-reliance and technological modernisation in defence.  These developments highlight Pakistan’s push to strengthen its conventional and naval deterrence capabilities as regional forces adjust to evolving military technologies. Islamabad Talks
Trump extends US-Iran ceasefire, second round of talks uncertain
US agrees to Pakistan's request to hold fire; Iran yet to confirm participation in second round of talks

On 21 April, DawnThe Express Tribune, and The News International reported that US President Donald Trump extended the Pakistan-brokered ceasefire with Iran hours before its expiry, citing a personal request from PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, and conditioning the extension on Tehran submitting a "unified proposal." The US naval blockade of Iranian ports remained in place. PM Shehbaz thanked Trump and expressed hope that both sides would conclude a comprehensive peace deal during the second round of Islamabad Talks. FM Ishaq Dar had earlier urged both sides to extend the ceasefire in a meeting with US Chargé d'Affaires Natalie Baker, while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Pakistan had made sincere efforts to bring Iran back to the table, with the ceasefire set to expire at 4:50 am PST on 22 April. Iran's foreign ministry had not confirmed participation, with spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei citing US seizure of Iranian vessels as "piracy" and questioning Washington's seriousness. Vice President JD Vance's departure for Islamabad was delayed for "additional policy meetings" at the White House.

On the ground, Rawalpindi and Islamabad witnessed significant disruption, with roads around Nur Khan Airbase closed, metro and electric bus services suspended, and schools and universities split between physical closures and online classes amid confusion over differing administrative directives. US military aircraft were seen landing at Nur Khan Airbase even as Iran maintained public ambiguity over its participation, with the first round of talks having ended without agreement over core disputes including Iran's nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz, and US sanctions. In Brief
EXTERNAL
Saudi Arabia transfers second tranche of USD three billion deposit
On 21 April, Dawn reported that Pakistan received USD one billion from Saudi Arabia as the second tranche of a recently agreed USD three billion deposit, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The transfer received on 20 April from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Finance follows an earlier tranche of USD two billion transferred the previous week. The financial support comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s diplomatic visit to Saudi Arabia amid efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and regional stability. Saudi Arabia has also pledged an additional USD three billion in deposits and extended an existing USD five billion facility to Pakistan for another three years. The transfer comes at a critical time for Pakistan’s external finances as the country faces pressure on foreign exchange reserves and repayment obligations, including a USD 3.5 billion loan to the UAE. Analysts note that the deposit will help stabilise reserves while Pakistan continues economic reforms under the International Monetary Fund programme. Azerbaijan signals readiness to supply LNG to Pakistan
On 21 April, Dawn reported that Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR has expressed readiness to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan once Islamabad submits a formal request. The offer comes as Pakistan seeks additional LNG cargoes to address a growing energy shortfall and rising electricity demand. According to SOCAR, a framework agreement signed in 2025 between SOCAR Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited allows Pakistan to purchase LNG cargoes under an existing government-to-government arrangement, enabling the country to seek LNG supplies from Azerbaijan when needed. However, the company did not confirm whether Pakistan has already made a request or when the first shipment might arrive. Pakistan has been facing increasing pressure on its energy sector due to declining domestic gas production and fluctuations in global LNG prices. The situation has been further complicated by supply disruptions linked to regional tensions and the temporary halt of LNG shipments from Qatar after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, pushing Pakistan to explore alternative energy sources. (“Azerbaijan says it is ready to supply LNG to Pakistan,” Dawn, 21 April 2026)

Pakistan condemns storming of Al Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli settlers
On 21 April, Dawn reported that Pakistan strongly condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem and the raising of the Israeli flag in its courtyard. In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Office described the incident as “reprehensible” and said it constituted a violation of international law and the sanctity of one of Islam’s holiest sites. According to reports, Israeli settlers entered the compound through the Mughrabi Gate under heavy police protection and performed religious rituals inside the area, while images circulated online showing individuals raising the Israeli flag near the Dome of the Rock. Pakistan warned that such actions could further escalate tensions in the region and called for urgent measures to protect holy sites under Israeli occupation. The statement also reiterated Pakistan’s continued solidarity with the Palestinian people and reaffirmed its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital. ECONOMY
Pakistan expands global borrowing strategy
On 22 April, Dawn reported that Pakistan invited bids from international financial institutions to act as underwriters and lead managers for future capital market transactions, a day after raising USD 750 million through a Eurobond at 6.975 per cent interest for three years. The government plans to form three consortia to manage Eurobonds, Sukuk, and dollar-settled local currency bonds under its Global Medium-Term Note programme. An official said selection would prioritise the “lowest yield, lowest coupon and lowest overall cost,” while adviser Khurram Schehzad noted the strategy allows Islamabad to tap markets “as and when required” based on financing needs. The move signals a structured push to diversify external funding sources, including ESG and green bonds, with issuance timing and size dependent on market conditions and investor demand. Govt actively diversifying capital markets strategy, says Finance Minister Aurangzeb
On 21 April, Dawn reported that Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said Pakistan was pursuing a diversified capital markets strategy to strengthen external buffers and ensure sustainable financing during a meeting with EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis. He highlighted Pakistan’s return to international markets after four years through a privately placed Eurobond, noting “strong investor interest” and improved macroeconomic stability. Aurangzeb said the move signalled “a positive trajectory for Pakistan’s global financial integration” and emphasised plans for future issuances and innovative instruments. He also expressed optimism about the external sector and hoped for continued progress under the GSP+ scheme. The meeting concluded with commitments to deepen Pakistan-EU trade and investment ties, alongside preparations for the upcoming EU–Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad. SECURITY
KP: Six militants killed in Khyber and Bannu
On 22 April, Dawn reported that security forces killed six militants in separate counter-terrorism operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber and Bannu districts. Five militants were killed in a major operation in Akkakhel, Bara, after intelligence indicated fighters from the Tirah Valley had regrouped near Peshawar. Officials said the operation prioritised civilian safety, noting drones and quadcopters were deliberately avoided to minimise collateral damage. In a separate raid in Bannu, forces killed a wanted militant, Naeemat Wazir alias “Grenade,” described as a key figure in regional violence. Authorities said an “intense exchange of fire” preceded his death. (“Six terrorists killed in Khyber, Bannu operations,” Dawn, 22 April 2026)

ON INDIA
Pakistan extends airspace ban on India until 24 May
On 21 April, Dawn reported that the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) extended its ban on Indian aircraft using Pakistan’s airspace until 24 May 2026, marking a full year of restrictions. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) confirmed that all Indian-registered, operated, and military flights remain barred from both the Karachi and Lahore flight information regions. The move follows escalating tensions between Pakistan and India after a deadly 2025 attack in Pahalgam, which New Delhi blamed on Islamabad - an allegation Pakistan denied while offering a neutral investigation. Since then, both countries have closed their airspace to each other. (“PAA extends airspace ban for Indian aircraft until May 24,” Dawn, 21 April 2026)

CLIMATE CHANGE
Over three million jobs may have been affected by 2025 floods, says ILO
On 21 April, Dawn reported that around 3.3 million jobs in Pakistan were affected by the 2025 floods, according to an assessment by the International Labour Organisation. The study, covering 14 severely impacted districts in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, found that nearly 78 per cent of employment losses occurred in rural areas, with agriculture hardest hit, followed by services and industry. ILO Country Director Geir Tonstol warned that “the floods have deepened economic vulnerability,” stressing the need for “timely measures” to restore livelihoods. Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain highlighted severe impacts on daily wage earners and small farmers, calling for targeted recovery programmes. The ILO recommended cash-for-work schemes, skills training, and subsidised credit to rebuild incomes and strengthen resilience against future climate shocks. POLITICS & GOVERNANCE
Aleema Khan attempts to ease tensions within PTI
On 22 April, Dawn reported that Aleema Khan, the sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, sought to reduce tensions within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership following disagreements with party Secretary General Salman Akram Raja. She clarified that she does not hold any official role in the party and is not seeking a party position, stressing that her primary focus is securing the release of Imran Khan from prison. Earlier, Aleema had criticised the party leadership for failing to effectively push for his release, which had triggered internal friction. Responding to speculation about her political ambitions, she stated that although she could technically qualify for a party role, she is currently not interested in pursuing one. Meanwhile, PTI leaders also raised concerns about the treatment of Imran Khan and other prisoners, and criticised the government’s economic policies linked to the IMF, arguing that such measures weaken Pakistan’s sovereignty. Islamabad Talks
Zahid Hussain, "The fog over peace talks," Dawn, 22 April 2026
"It's a challenging task to decipher US President Donald Trump’s ever-changing statements on war and peace. His recent posts on social media and various media interviews with him have left us bewildered. The remarks are puzzling and compound the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the next round of US-Iran talks. The president’s constant self-aggrandisement has made it hard to believe anything he says. It is both comical and dangerous."

M Zeb Khan, "A moment of diplomacy, a test of reality," The Express Tribune, 22 April 2026
"For a country often trapped in cycles of crisis, even a fleeting moment of diplomatic triumph can feel transformative. Pakistan's recent role in easing tensions between the US and Iran has been celebrated as a rare assertion of strategic relevance. In a region where escalation often seems inevitable, any contribution toward de-escalation deserves recognition. It projects an image of a state capable not just of reacting to events but of shaping them."

Judiciary
Editorial, "Extrajudicial killing," Dawn, 22 April 2026
"The appeal by a Lady Health Worker from Muzaffargarh to the chief justice of Pakistan for an independent probe into the killing of her two sons in an alleged police ‘encounter’ underlines the eroding public trust in provincial authorities to deliver justice. Her account of police torture and the subsequent killing of her sons in a so-called encounter is not an isolated allegation. It reflects a continuing pattern in which the once sporadic instances of police staging encounters to eliminate suspected criminals appear to have evolved into a systemic practice. Figures cited by the media and rights groups reinforce this concern. Estimates based on reported incidents indicate that hundreds of police encounters in recent months have resulted in a staggering number of deaths across Punjab. Rather than prompting action, these encounters have at times been praised by political authorities as an effective deterrent against crime. It signals not just tolerance of extrajudicial methods, but also a tacit endorsement of them as an official crime control policy."

Health
Editorial, "Lingering threat of polio," The Express Tribune, 22 April 2026
"The recently concluded nationwide anti-polio campaign is being called a resounding success by those directly involved in the vaccination drive. The National Emergency Operations Center reports that over 44.7 million children under five received the vaccine, a figure just shy of the 45 million target, representing over 99% coverage."

Pakistan & the IMF
Editorial, "IMF's 'do more'," The Express Tribune, 22 April 2026
"A 'do more' list with a call to 'do it within the timeframe' has been handed over to the government by IMF. The global lender seems to believe that it's time to walk the talk, and let stringent reforms be ushered in the body politic of an economy that has long been surviving on borrowed money, and wherein ad hocism is the way to go."
