Nepal: Eroding Narayani river forces Susta villagers into overnight embankment effort
On 11 August, The Kathmandu Post reported that residents of Susta Rural Municipality-5 in Nawalparasi West worked through the night on 09 August, racing to reinforce the riverbank for fear that floodwaters from the Narayani river could spill into their settlement. Young men were seen hauling sandbags and arranging wire mesh past midnight, with resident Kamal Bhagat teaching others reinforcement techniques. Locals said the river has eroded the bank more aggressively than in previous years, with residents labouring for 11 days to build the barrier. Residents said they also face persistent pressure from India's border security force, the Sashastra Seema Bal. Resident Osiya Khan appealed to the government to negotiate with India to allow a permanent embankment up to the border, after earlier construction stalled amid Indian objections.

Sri Lanka: Cabinet approves voluntary return of war-era Tamil refugees from India
On 11 August, the Daily Mirror reported that Sri Lanka's Cabinet approved measures to facilitate the voluntary return of Sri Lankans who had fled to India during the civil war without valid travel documents and were subsequently registered as refugees. The decision followed legal advice from the Attorney General and was submitted by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs. Under the approved framework, those who left before 01 August 2006 without valid travel documents must obtain clearance from the State Intelligence Service, confirming they have not been accused of murder, treason, or related offences. Those cleared will be issued temporary passports and permitted to enter through approved ports without facing legal action under the Immigration and Emigration Act. The same facility extends to those who left between 01 August 2006 and 19 May 2009. As of early 2026, around 89,000 Sri Lankan Tamils remained in Tamil Nadu, India, with approximately 40 per cent born in India.

Maldives: MMA boosts weekly dollar allocations by 51 per cent, seeks to relieve forex shortage
On 11 August, The Sun reported that to relieve severe foreign exchange pressures and assist importers, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has increased weekly US dollar allocations to commercial banks by 51 per cent for three weeks. This initiative aims to help small and medium enterprises settle import payments via letters of credit and telegraphic transfers. The intervention follows a sharp drop in foreign currency inflows, whose primary catalyst was a 20.7 per cent decline in tourist arrivals during the month of March, triggered by the political instability in the Middle East. Currently, the dollar in the black market amounts to MVR 22, which threatens inflation of prices for essential commodities. This step is also recurrent, with the MMA taking the same measures during the festive season of Ramadan and in the month of June.
