The US: SpaceX releases its financial accounts for the first time
On 20 May, SpaceX, the private company, most popularly known for maintaining its finances in a closed manner. For the first time released a detailed account on its business, nearly 400 page S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The document provides SpaceX estimates of the total addressable market (TAM) reaching up to 28.5 trillion dollars, covering its present and future capabilities in space, data and AI services and out of which only 2 trillion dollars are being  directed towards space or the company’s Starlink network (“Famously secret about its finances, SpaceX opens its books for the first time” Ars Technica 21 May, 2026; “Space Exploration Technologies -S-1” SEC.gov 19 May, 2026)

The US: Statements made on the next WRC at the ASCEND conference
On 19 May, the ASCEND conference held in Washington DC, as reported by spacenews states that the officials from the White House claimed that US would go into a major international conference, namely the World Radiocommunication Conference taking place in Shanghai during the months of October and November in 2027, being better prepared than ever to defend key radio-frequency spectrum priorities. Ryan Baasch, deputy director of the National Economic Council spoke about the current administration being most serious about winning at the WRC. It has also been reported that WRC is critical for the space industry because most of its items on the agenda deal with space applications of a wide spectrum. A concern was raised regarding the location of the conference stating China could influence national delegations or eavesdrop on communications and tilt standards in a direction against US industry. NASA Administrator, Jared Isaccman also said that he expects China to perform a crewed flight around the moon in 2027, heightening the perceptions of space race between the US and China.

The US: Advancing cancer and space biotechnology research aboard Expedition 74
On 19 May, NASA released a blog by the Expedition 74 crew that began on December 8, 2025 ending in the summer of 2026, it is a NASA crew of astronauts and scientists who conduct advanced space research. The Expedition 74 crew conducted cancer research aboard the International space station’ s Kibo module studying how microgravity affects an anti-cancer drug that could improve pancreatic cancer therapies. NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir processed cartilage tissue samples in weightlessness to develop better implants for injured patients on Earth. It also noted significant progress being made in nutrient rich microgreens as future astronaut food and progress has also been made in the configuration of robotic arms. This highlights how space-based scientific innovation is contributing to medical advancements, sustainable food technologies, and the future of long-duration human space exploration on Earth and beyond.

The US: Washington faces controversy over NASA’s Mars orbiter contract
On 20 May, NASA urgently needs a new Mars orbiter before its old ones fail, but the 700 million dollars contract to build it, is being questioned for favouring certain companies and sidelining scientific goals in the rush to meet a politically inferred deadline. Senator Ted Cruz’s “One Big Beautiful bill” passed last summer the contract has to be awarded by 30 September 2026 and the space craft must be launched by late 2028. The legislation tailored to benefit Rocket lab however it also opened the door for broader competition. However only companies that previously received funding for mars sample return commercial design studies proposed a mars telecom orbiter as part of those studies can bid. In February, NASA awarded Rocket lab, 390,936 dollars contract to study “Mars End-to-End Communication Service Architectures.” This hence favours their position in winning the award for the contract in comparison to the other competitors such as Blue origin, L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, Rocket lab, SpaceX and so on. These concerns over political influence, competition fairness, and scientific priorities highlight the growing intersection of space exploration, commercial interests, and national strategic ambitions in today’s global space industry.
