SCO concludes Tianshan-2026 Cyber Anti-Terrorism drills in China
On 06 August, CGTN reported that delegations from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) completed a joint cyber anti-terrorism exercise called "Tianshan-2026" in Urumqi, China. The drill focused on modern, digital terrorism threats by simulating scenarios where extremist groups used online platforms to spread ideology, recruit members, and plan attacks. Participating teams worked together, tracked digital threats, and coordinated with offline law enforcement. SCO officials praised China's organization of the exercise, noting that it successfully improved mutual trust and strengthened the region's shared ability to combat cyber terrorism.

China escalates emergency response actions as Typhoon Dolphin approaches
On 07 August, CGTN reported that China’s meteorological, marine, water resources, and agricultural authorities have escalated emergency response measures as Typhoon Dolphin entered the country's 48-hour warning zone. The typhoon is moving steadily westward with an extensive wind field, and forecasters state that it is expected to generate dangerous 4-to-7-meter waves in the East China Sea. Authorities are utilizing advanced artificial intelligence and digital twin systems to simulate flood risks and improve forecasting accuracy. Experts warn that because the storm will slow down near the coast, these hazardous sea conditions may be difficult to perceive from the shoreline, making it crucial for the public to avoid the coast. Upon making landfall, the typhoon, according to forecasts, is expected to bring prolonged torrential rainfall across multiple provinces, including Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, and Shandong. They also warn of the heightened risk of flash floods and landslides where soil is already saturated. Fishing vessels have been ordered back to port to minimize agricultural and coastal losses. Fishermen are evacuating ashore, and farmers are rushing to clear drainage channels, harvest mature crops early, and reinforce greenhouses and livestock shelters.

CHINA AND SPACE
China to build a planetary protection lab for Tianwen-3 Mars sample-return mission
On 06 August, CGTN reported that China is advancing its Tianwen-3 Mars sample-return mission for which it will construct a planetary protection laboratory during the first phase of its Deep-Space Science City in Hefei, Anhui Province. The Mars sample-return mission aims to launch a spacecraft around 2028 and bring Martian soil and rock samples to Earth by 2031. The lab is being built to safely handle these materials, and the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory (DSEL) will be operating in parts of the operations. The lab will enforce a strict two-way protection system designed to prevent Earth organisms from contaminating Mars and to safeguard Earth's biosphere from any potential extraterrestrial biological risks during sample unsealing, sterilization, and testing. This interplanetary effort builds directly upon the success of China's Zhurong rover, which landed on Mars in May 2021. It traveled nearly two kilometers to gather extensive scientific data, paving the way for these upcoming research breakthroughs.

CHINA AND EAST ASIA
China is closer to developing lithography technology to manufacture sub 7nm chips, says The Korean Herald
On 06 August, The Tribune reported that China is close to developing its own immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography system, which can theoretically enable it to produce sub 7nm semiconductor chips, per a report by The Korean Herald. China is currently blocked from accessing the most advanced lithography systems due to US export control restrictions and has primarily relied on pushing older DUV equipment to produce sub 7nm chips. South Korean experts claim that despite a working model developed by China, scaling it to mass production and profitability is in question and will take “considerable time before China can produce meaningful results.” Experts add that the latest development poses little threat to South Korean chip giants such as Samsung and SK Hynix, but if China is willing to absorb low profits, it may close down the technology gap.

CHINA AND THE PACIFIC
China’s ballistic missile test to be top agenda in Pacific island countries’ Foreign Ministers' meeting
On 07 August, The Hindustan Times reported that the top agenda to be discussed in the upcoming Foreign Ministers' meeting of Pacific Island nations will be China’s test of a nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) over the region. The Foreign Ministers' meeting in Suva, Fiji, which is to be held on Friday, comes ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum, an annual meeting of the heads of state of the countries in the region in September. China has considerable influence within some member states, such as Kiribati, Nauru, and Vanuatu, where Beijing is their largest trading partner. The ministers are also set to discuss the Pacific Forum’s regional architecture, determining “key partners” to be invited for the leaders' meeting in September.

CHINA AND THE AMERICAS
Washington demands transparency from Beijing over transnational crime syndicates
On 07 August, MSN reported that the US President Donald Trump has directly raised concerns with China’s President Xi Jinping regarding Southeast Asian cyber scam compounds targeting Americans. Despite the expanding law enforcement cooperation between the FBI and Chinese police, Washington remains highly sceptical of Beijing's actions against transnational fraud syndicates. Testimony before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee by Michael DeSombre, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, highlighted the growing concerns that China selectively targets syndicates defrauding Chinese citizens while showing opacity regarding the prosecution of extradited ringleaders. Furthermore US officials have also warned that Chinese law enforcement's selective crackdowns lack transparency thereby making it difficult to verify if the deported criminal bosses face genuine punishment. To prevent intelligence loss and ensure accountability Washington is now pressing partner nations to allow US access to captured scam leaders as these criminal networks expand globally at a fast pace.
