NIAS Polar and Ocean Studies

NIAS Polar and Ocean Studies aims to study the polar regions - the Arctic, Antarctic and the oceans. It aims to study the following verticals: Governance, Conservation, Blue Economy, Security, Infrastructure, Ocean Health, Ocean Science, and Ocean as a Global Common. 

The Indo-Arctic Reader is a Monthly Dispatch, mapping of daily developments in the polar regions and regular summary and analysis of contemporary developments as short notes and commentaries on the polar regions. It will build capacity amongst young scholars, include expert lectures by prominent academicians and diplomats, and monthly discussions on the Arctic, Antarctic and oceans.

The Institute’s Global Politics team also has created a network of institutions on the East Coast and West Coast of India in Chennai, Pondicherry, Kottayam, Kochi and Goa. These institutions (University of Madras, Indian Maritime University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Goa University etc) have a focus on Oceans and Polar regions.

About the team

Prof D Suba Chandran is the Dean of the School of Conflict and Security Studies at NIAS. He heads the Science, Technology and International Relations. He coordinates the NIAS Europe Studies.

Padmashree Anandhan is a Project Associate at NIAS, Bangalore. She is associated with the NIAS Europe Studies. Her research focuses on issues relating to politics, protests, maritime and NATO' operations in the Western Europe and Nordic.

Sreeja JS is a Research Intern at NIAS, Bangalore. She is currently a postgraduate scholar at Madras Christan College, Chennai. Her areas of interest include EU-China relatons, challenges in EU integraton and emerging technologies
